Silverbeet, Mushroom & Broccoli Quiche

I made a quiche for the first time ever today and wow I must say, even I was impressed with how well this turned out....

Pie Crust

Ingredients:

2 cups flour
1/2 cup vegan margarine
1 1/2 tbsp coconut sugar
1/2 tsp salt
4 tblsp vegetable oil
6 tbsp cold water

Recipe:

Sift the flour into a large bowl. Add sugar and salt.
Add margarine and mix until the mixture is crumbly.

In another bowl whisk the water and oil together.
Add to the flour mixture until you can form a dough.

Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 30 mins.

Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and press into a pie tin.

Filling

Ingredients:

1 brown onion, diced
2 large silverbeet leaves, chopped
1 cup broccoli, chopped
1 cup mushrooms, sliced
1 packet firm tofu (patted dry)
1 vegie sausage, chopped
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 tbsp dried basil
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup rice milk
1 tbsp nutritional yeast flakes
Olive oil

Recipe:

Preheat the oven to 220 degrees.

Heat the olive oil in a saucepan on medium heat.
Add the onion, broccoli and mushrooms.
Cook for 5 mins then add the silverbeet.

In a food processor or high speed blender, blend the tofu, turmeric, basil, nutmeg, salt, yeast flakes and rice milk until you have a nice, smooth consistency.

In a small fry pan, fry the vegie sausage in olive oil for 2 minutes or until brown. Chop into small pieces.

Stir the vegetables into the tofu mixture and add the vegie sausage.

Pour the batter into the pie crust and bake for 35 - 40 minutes.

Bon appetite!

Sadhana Kitchen

I tried a few things for the first time in my life today.
One of them being raw vegan food, and boy am I glad I tried it at Sadhana Kitchen.

Recently opened and run by Maz & Sam (living & wholefood enthusiasts), you can trust that you are receiving healthy, nutritious & delicious food!

The menu is dairy, sugar & wheat free and most items are gluten free unless stated.

The vibe is warm and funky with a great cushioned floor seating area and graffiti artworks.

I had the Rice balls for entree, Zucchini Lasagna for main and a Blueberry & Lemon cheesecake for dessert. I absolutely loved all of it!!!!

My mum and sister chose the Spinach & Mushroom Quiche for main and enjoyed the Chocolate/ Raspberry tart for dessert.
I had to try their's too and OMG that Chocolate Raspberry tart was to die for.

Sadhana's also make awesome Green Smoothies and Tonic juices to cleanse your body.

And ..... if that's not enough for you, they also run affordable workshops to help introduce you to raw foods and fantastic recipes.

Get behind this place and go try Sadhana Kitchen's quality food at 76A Wilford Street, Newtown!

Nu,nu,nutorious

I decided to head to the city last weekend.

On my journey I stopped by Nutorious (a caramelised nut shop in qvb).

I always used to enjoy eating these marvellous nuts prior to my veganism, so this time, I decided to ask the owner whether they were vegan friendly.
She confirmed.......

THEY ARE!! Whoop Whoop :)

All they use to caramelise them is sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and water!

They are made fresh consistently throughout the day and are wrapped in little cellophane bags. You can choose a mixed bag or choose your favourite nut to go.

So if you haven't tried them yet, get moving!!!!!

Basil Pizza & Pasta

Tonight, I felt like pizza.

I heard Basil Pizza & Pasta call my name.

Basil is a small pizzeria located at 126 King St, Newtown.

They offer a wide range of vegan and vegetarian pizzas as well as pastas.

Cheezly is the preferred vegan cheese used by Basil Pizzeria and my favourite by far.

As well as mains, the majority of the cakes they stock for desserts are vegan too, as they are made by RubyFruit bakery.

Basil is open every night after 5pm and offer home delivery, take out and eat in options, so if your in Sydney and feel like some pizza, call Basil on 02 9519 4880.

You wont regret it :)

Welcome to Sydney Vegan!

Hello all,

My name is Janine and I will be your blogger, shall you choose to follow me.

Today I decided to start a blog for Sydney Siders who are vegan/vegetarian or those who are interested in learning about the vegan lifestyle.

My main inspiration for this blog was the pure fact that when I went vegan 2 and a half years ago, I did it solo. I had no one around me that was vegan, let alone vegetarian, and I think when you have a support network, it makes it so much easier to lead this lifestyle.

So for those of you who need some support, i'm all ears, for those who want some killer dessert recipes, i'll be your new best friend and for those who simply want to enjoy their life in a new, healthier, more ethical way, I plan to assist you in one way - blogging, blogging, blogging.

The more comments you leave, the more feedback i'll get and I do like feedback so in most situations (given that the feedback is logical) I will apply people's suggestions.

So, enjoy it.

Peace out,

J9
